Infertility Evaluation

Infertility Evaluation & Therapy

Infertility is defined as 9 months of unprotected intercourse at least once or twice per week, without conception. At this point, a basic infertility evaluation is warranted. We understand that this can be a very emotional issue with the couple.

The first office visit is usually about 30 minutes with the doctor. Before expensive testing is done, it is important to do a semen analysis on the male partner and demonstrate monthly ovulation of the female partner. If this initial part of the evaluation is normal, then intercourse is timed to occur around ovulation and a calendar diary is kept by the couple to include this information and reviewed with the doctor after 3 months. From this point, management is individualized depending on the age, medical findings and wishes of the couple. Sometimes the best or only chance for a normal pregnancy is in vitro fertilization. When this is the case, the couple is referred to a Reproductive Endocrinologist. Typically, infertility appointments and treatments are not covered by insurance.
