Cesarean Birth on Request

Many women experience great emotional and psychological satisfaction from vaginal childbirth. Other women have been very content with a Cesarean Birth. Cesarean Birth by maternal request is when a woman simply requests a Cesarean because of the advantages associated with it and not for any pregnancy related medical condition.

Women requesting Cesarean Birth is becoming more common in the U.S., especially on the East Coast. It has been popular in other countries for some time. In 2005 the Cesarean Birth rate in the U.S. was 30.2%, with 62% being primary (first) Cesarean Births. In Brazil, the wealthiest 10% of pregnant women had a 77% Cesarean Birth rate and most of these were requested in early pregnancy and scheduled near the “due date” for convenience and the advantages listed in the next section.
